The multifaceted Danish artist Martin Bigum proved with his recent exhibition at the Arken Museum of Modern Art just how wide an audience he has reached. Stylistically he draws on the diverse world of comics and popular culture mixed with a considerable dose of his own enormous knowledge about art history as well as personal experiences that all together creates a very unique hybrid. In this way Bigum draws effortlessly from a huge fountain of motifs and scenarios, which "The Great Divide" is a shining example of, and which the artist describes as a centrepiece of his career. "My father died in 2005, and it was a relief for him, I suppose ... This (The Great Divide) is from 2006 and was driven by the realization that a challenging period was coming to an end. I see in the image both a sigh of relief as well as a descent into life's harsh realities. There are figures riding on soap bubbles, each of them swinging a whip, as if to get the most out of a fragile moment. They are all over the sky in the painting. And I see my father in heaven, and his world is turned upside down," says the artist himself when describing the painting in the book ?Min personlige kunsthistorie?. (My personal history of art).
