Lot no. 1838
Theodor Alt (1846 Döhlau/Upper Franconia - 1937 Ansbach) Bust portrait of a girl with a black and red hat Painted in a quick, broad, fluid style, this realistic half-profile portrait was probably created around 1870-1873. Alt's use of light effectively emphasises the white blouse, the face and the red elements on the top of the hat. Theodor Alt studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1863, initially under Hermann Anschütz and from 1866 to 1873 under Arthur von Ramberg. His fellow student Wilhelm Leibl, whom he joined, had a formative influence on Alt. Together with Leibl, Johann Sperl and Rudolf Hirth du Frênes, Alt moved into a shared studio in Munich's Arcisstraße in 1869, from which the famous Leibl circle was formed, to which Karl Haider, Fritz Schider and Wilhelm Trübner also belonged. Alt's works from those years were significantly influenced by Leibl, whose influence is also reflected in the present portrait. Oil on canvas; signed a.; 59 cm x 47 cm. Probably original frame. Oil on canvas. Signed. Probably original frame.
