Caruelle d'Aligny explored Italy for five years from 1822, joined by Corot from 1825. The Serpentara forest was made famous by the enthusiasm it aroused, particularly among German Romantic painters, to the extent that in 1873 the grove was acquired by the German Reich in order to save it from deforestation.
