Théophile GAUTIER (1811-1872). Autograph MANUSCRIT with DRAWING, [1848 ?] 2 pages in-8 (19 x 11 cm). Sketches for a poem in Émaux et Camées, with a pen-and-ink drawing.
On the front, a draft, with erasures and corrections, for the poem Affinités secrètes, Madrigal panthéiste, published in the Revue des deux mondes on 15 January 1849, before being collected in Émaux et Camées in 1852. The first stanza has found its definitive form:
"In the pediment of an ancient temple
Two blocks of marble are three thousand years old"...
The second stanza was drafted and corrected, very different from the final version:
"Two pearls in the same mother-of-pearl
Tears of the waves weeping for Venus"...
It is repeated in a different form, with many cross-outs:
"For Cleopatra's supper
Deux perles"...
The draft of the third stanza follows:
"In the fresh Generalife hatched
Under the still weeping stream of water"...
Verso, pen and brown ink drawing of a lizard.
Certificate from Évariste BOULAY-PATY (1804-1864): "drawing and handwriting by Théophile Gautier Ev. B p".
