Théophile GAUTIER (1811-1872). POEM autograph signed, Essai de Printemps, [1851] 1 page small in-8 (18 x 8.5 cm). Famous poem from Émaux et Camées (1852).
It was first published, untitled, in La Presse on 7 April 1851, before being collected, under the title Premier sourire du printemps, in Émaux et Camées (1852). It consists of eight quatrains:
"Tandis qu'à leurs œuvres perverses
Men run breathless,
Mars laughs in spite of the showers
Secretly prepares the spring. [...]
Then when his work is done
And his reign comes to an end
On the threshold of April turning his head
He says, "Spring, you can come!
