Rare first edition of this treatise on dietetics, written by "one of the most famous and celebrated physicians of this century", but which remained anonymous; it provides valuable information on food during the reign of Henri IV: in ten chapters, it describes seeds, cereals and vegetables; red and white wines, aromatic wines, fruit wines and beers; meat from "four-footed beasts"; poultry and game; sea fish; freshwater fish, turtles, crayfish, frogs; milk, cheese, mustard, vinegar, spices, olive oil, sugar, honey....; soups, roots, garden herbs (artichokes, cucumber, melon...); fruit; jams... Exotic specialities include root bread from the New World, palm wine from Africa and the East Indies, etc.
This treatise is characterised by the maintenance of medieval tastes, and the development of regional specialities and recipes for cooking.
Leaves G7, M3, and to the last white endpaper, marginal lack without gravity. Binding restored. A few pale freckles, and a small stain on the last table leaves.
