THUCYDIDE. Περί του Πελοποννησιακού πολέμου. De bello Peloponnesiaco libri octo. [Genève], Henri Estienne, 1564. 2 parts in one volume in-folio, fawn basane, double frame of gilt roulettes, sown with gilt fleurs-de-lys on the boards, figure PS in the spandrels and in the centre in a medallion of laurels, spine decorated with the same repeated figure and with fleurs-de-lys, roulette on the edges, gilt edges (17th century binding). First edition of Thucydides published by the Estienne family. It is also the first edition of La Guerre du Péloponnèse giving the Greek text and a Latin translation. This is one of the best early editions of the great Athenian historian. The Latin translation by Lorenzo Valla revised by Henri Estienne that it contains owes almost more to the latter than to the former. This is a prize copy with the College du Plessis-Sorbonne coat-of-arms in a fine binding with fleur-de-lys. Spellings and tears, one headband torn off, light spotting on a few leaves, scattered brown spots, ms. bookplate crossed out on verso of title. Renouard, 123:7 - Schreiber, n°153 - Adams, T-666 - GLN-2254.
