Having found his fellow student Sparrman in Cape Town (see no. 69), the botanist Thunberg went on several expeditions with him to South Africa before going to Japan, where very few foreigners were allowed to enter. He stayed there for fifteen months (1775-1776), collecting numerous specimens and bringing back important observations on crafts (papermaking, etc.), trade, politics and customs.
