THURNEISSER ZUM THURN (Leonhard). ZEHEN BÜCHER VON KALTEN, WARMEN, MINERISCHEN UND METTALISCHEN WASSERN...
Strasburg, Lazari Zetzner, 1612.
In-folio of [18]-324-[47]-1bl.-[5]-13 pages, stamped vellum with a large decoration of foliage and figures and scenes in a central rectangle, with the initials I.G.V.H.Z.B.V.M. and the date 1585 (contemporary binding).
Engraved title and several woodcuts in the text depicting utensils.
Second edition of this famous work on thermalism. Thuneysser is important for the history of pharmacy because he was the first to systematically analyse mineral waters and discuss the chemical substances of mineral waters, describing the apparatus needed to analyse and manufacture artificial waters. He also gives a full description of German rivers: the Danube, the Rhine, the Elbe, the Spree, etc. The appendix on the Selbacher Bad is added here for the first time with its own title page.
The copy is rebound in a Germanic binding dated 1585, with scenes in the centre of the boards accompanied by the following inscriptions.
1st board: Impetrat alma fides Cristo quam Dante salutem expectares. Spes animosa and on the second plate: Que vocor insigni caritum De nomine virtus omniaque pietas suadet Orire sequor (What salvation would you expect from God. Ardent hope and holy faith give light...).
Several quires foxed, due to the quality of the paper (DSB XIII, pp. 396-398) (Ferguson II, 453).
