First edition of a rare and curious treatise of demonology on possessed or haunted places, the evil spirits that infest them and the means of exorcising them. The second edition, revised and enlarged, of the treatise on demonic possession by the same author has been bound in. The first edition of this long-authoritative book was published in 1594 by the same Cologne publisher. The two works were combined in a single edition in the third, entitled Daemonici cum locis infestis et terriculamentis nocturnis (Cologne, Cholinus, 1627). The German Jesuit Peter Thyräus (1546-1601) was a professor of theology in Mainz and then in Würzburg. He was the first theologian to consider possession as an objective phenomenon, and here he attempts a systematic approach to the phenomena of possession, distinguishing between the demon's occupation of the body and the spirit, and proposing a classification of symptoms according to the subject and the manifestations. A copy bearing the arms of the Cistercian abbey of Saint-Urbain, Switzerland, founded in the 12th century at Pfaffnau in the Rot valley, with a handwritten bookplate on the title of both books.
