Lot no. 43
TIFFANY & Cie PARIS
Vinaigrette held by a ring with 18k (750 thousandths) yellow gold contours and chains surrounding a hand-painted porcelain bottle in the spirit of Fragonnard. The vinaigrette helped ladies of condition to breathe in a pungent odour to recover from fainting caused by too-tight corsets. Eagle's head hallmark on the bottle and ring. Original velvet and silk case signed Tiffany & Cie, 36 bis Avenue de l'Opéra, Paris. The upper part of the capsule is missing. Small gold stopper in the neck.
Finger size: 52.5
Size of bottle: 9.2 x 4.7 cm. 78.9 g.
This bottle with chain ring is described by Edward Strahan as "Vinaigrette in gold and porcelain" in the inventory of the W. H. Vanderbilt collection in his New York home. It is exactly the same. A few other completely similar models are known throughout the world, but none could be attributed to Tiffany & Cie Paris. This gap has now been filled thanks to this lot presented by AZ Auction in Brussels. The known examples do not come in their original cases, which shows the rarity of the set we are presenting here.
Earl Shinn, Mr. Vanderbilt's house and collection: volume 1, described by Edward Strahan, Boston, 1883-1884. Digitised version in the rare books of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
