Lot no. 60
TOBIAS VERHAECHT (Antwerp, 1561 - 1631) Mountainous landscape with lake and bridge (c. 1600) Oil on panel, 39X74 cm Provenance: London, antiquarian market Turin, Caretto Gallery, 1976, no. 64 Genoa, private collection Bibliography: https://rkd.nl/imageslite/691734 https://rkd.nl/imageslite/691673 Verhaecht came from a famous family of Antwerp painters and his works adhere to a typically Flemish taste. Browsing through his production, one perceives a clear adherence to the tradition of 16th century landscape painting, which echoes the compositions of Gillis van Coninxloo and Joos de Momper. From a biographical point of view, little is known about his education; his membership of the Guild of St. Luke in 1590/1591 is attested and he was subsequently in Italy in Florence and Rome, enjoying considerable success. In 1594 he returned to Antwerp, where he became senior dean of the guild and participated in the decoration for the triumphal entry of the regent, Archduke Ernest. Reference bibliography: J.
