Rare and much sought-after first edition of the first part of Tocqueville's masterpiece. It is illustrated with a folding map of North America, lithographed by Benard and coloured in watercolours. The two volumes forming the second part were not published until five years later, while the first two were in their third edition. It is therefore extremely difficult to find a complete copy of the four volumes with the correct dates in a perfectly uniform binding.
