Lot no. 219
[TOPFFER Rodolphe]. Idée de Pierre Gétroz, marguillier de l'église paroissiale de Mont-Bovon, sur l'exposition de tableaux de Genève en l'an de grâce 1826. Genève, Chez tous les Libraires, 1826; booklet in-8, [4]-28 pp. half red morocco with corners, ribbed spine, gilt head, untrimmed (Stroobants). First edition of this anonymous attack on Genevan art. Bound at the head is an interesting autograph letter dated 24 August 1826 and signed P. Gétroz [Topffer], addressed to Monsieur Chaponnière, Commissionaire au Molard. 2 pp. in-4, folded. Jean-François Chaponnière (1769-1856), founder of the Journal de Genève, was one of the leading figures in art criticism. He had reacted strongly to Töpffer's libel in the press, and Töpffer justified himself in his letter of reply with a great deal of humour: "I would therefore like to thank you, Sir, for the indulgence with which you treat a little bluette which is all too apparent from the short time it took me to write it. The fault lies, as you know, with my cousin Quercy and your perfectly accurate observations about the lack of harmony in the style, I will pass them on to him...". Rodolphe Töpffer, Correspondance complète, edited and annotated by Jacques Droin, I, p.318. A very fine copy. Heraldic bookplate in red morocco of the de Geer family (Netherlands).
