TÖPFFER (Rodolphe). Voyages en Zig-Zag ou excursions d'un pensionnat en vacances dans les cantons Suisses et sur le revers Italien des Alpes. Paris, J. J. Dubochet et compagnie, 1844. Large in-8°, full morocco binding, 5-ribbed spine with gilt title, double gilt fillets on the fields, very fine gilt roulette and gilt fillets on the inside back covers, speckled endpapers, gilt edges, in cardboard slipcase. Bound at the end of the 19th century by Joseph Bretault, a pupil of Victor Champs, established as a bookbinder in Paris on rue Bonaparte in 1880. First collective edition of Voyages en zig-zag, in a version interpreted by the best engravers of the time. Illustrated with 422 woodcuts including 53 hors-texte, 15 by Alexandre Calame. Uncommon first edition, as is the case of this copy. The work contains: voyage aux Alpes et en Italie (1837), Saint-Gothard, vallée de Misocco, Via Mala, Glaris et Schwitz (1838), Milan, Côme, Splugen (1839), Chamounix, l'Oberland, le Righi (1840), le tour du lac en quatre journées (1841), voyage à Venise (1842). A very fine copy, superbly bound and perfectly fresh.
