Es wird in der nächstfolgenden Überarbeitung des Werkverzeichnisses unter der Nr. 18.Oe.36 aufgenommen. Des weiteren liegt das Ergebnis einer naturwissenschaftlichen Untersuchung zum Material und zum maltechnischen Aufbau von Frau Prof. Dr. Elisabeth Jägers, Bornheim, vom 4. Oktober 2010 vor. In diesem farbintensiven Gemälde schildert Arnold Topp das Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges. Nie von Kriegseuphorie erfasst, gibt er hier eindrucksvoll seiner Angst um die Zukunft Deutschlands Ausdruck, über dessen Niederlage er sich keine Illusionen macht: Von allen Seiten drängt aggressives Rot als erdrückende Übermacht auf die Stadt ein, sogar der sich rotfärbende Mond ist in diese Phalanx einbezogen. Riesige Quader und andere zertrümmerte Formen stürzen von links - also von Westen - auf die Stadt und diffuses raumforderndes Rot sowie der aufbrechende Boden untergraben die Standhaftigkeit der Häuser. Die Kirche links im Bild ist bereits im Fallen begriffen. Einer Supernova gleich rafft sich die Stadt in einem letzten überirdisch leuchtenden Gelb zum Widerstand auf, den Angreifern ihr goldenes Kreuz stolz entgegenreckend, doch ist das kaum mehr eine hohle Phrase, denn die eher einem Tempel gleichende Kirche im Zentrum - möglicherweise das Symbol deutscher Kaisermacht - bricht schon in sich zusammen, das Licht in ihren Fenstern ist erloschen. Das Schicksal ist damit besiegelt und ihr Sturz scheint die rechts im Bild befindlichen Häuser, deren Fenster noch erleuchtet sind, in den Untergang mitzureißen. Die Darstellung wird von dem überwältigenden Rot-Gelb-Kontrast bestimmt, der alles hinwegfegenden Kraft des Rot steht ein übersteigertes, im Zentrum die größte Helligkeit erreichendes Gelb gegenüber, eine Farbkomposition, die keinen Ausgleich zulässt und durchaus die Assoziation mit einem Flammeninferno erlaubt. Beruhigend wirkt lediglich das überall durchscheinende Blau des Weltenraumes als dritte der reinen Farben, das die lediglich vordergründige irdische Hektik als bloßen Schein in den über allem liegenden ewigen Zusammenhang von Raum und Zeit zu bringen scheint. (Rainer Enders) Möglicherweise handelt es sich bei diesem Bild um das verschollene Gemälde Gelbes Haus (Wvz.-Nr. 18.Oe.14). In seiner Komposition fallen Ähnlichkeiten mit dem Werk Der Turm (Wvz.-Nr. 18.Oe.3) auf, so dass beide Arbeiten in zeitlicher Nähe entstanden sein dürften. (Vgl. Furthermore, the result of the scientific examination of the material and the painting technique by Frau Prof. Dr. Elisabeth Jägers, Bornheim, from 4 October 2010 is available. In this colour intense painting Arnold Topp describes the end of WWI. Having never been seized by the euphoria of war he powerfully expresses his concern for Germany's future and his disillusionment as to his country's defeat: From all sides, an aggressive red, a dominating power forces its way into the city, even the moon, having turned red, has been included in this phalanx. Huge squares and other smashed forms are tumbling down from the left - that is from the west - onto the town and a diffuse, space-consuming red as well as the ground breaking open undermine the houses' stability. The church on the painting's left is already falling down. Like a supernova the city in a last unearthly yellow braces itself up to resist, proudly holding out its golden cross against the aggressors but this is hardly more than a void phrase as the church or rather the temple in the centre - possibly a symbol for the German imperial power - is already breaking down, the light in its windows having gone out. Consequently the city's fate has already been sealed and the church's downfall seems to include the houses with their still illuminated windows on the painting's right. The representation is characterised by an overpowering red-yellow-contrast, the all-effacing red is juxtaposed with an exaggerated yellow that reaches its maximum brightness in the centre. A composition of colours that doesn't permit any harmony and therefore allows an association with infernal flames. It is only the colour blue, the third pure colour in the painting, the colour of the universe shining through that has a soothing effect and seems to bring the superficial earthly bustle into an eternal context of space and time. (Translated after a German quotation from Rainer Enders) This work might possibly be the lost painting Gelbes Haus (Cat.rais.-no. 18.Oe.14). Its composition features striking parallels with the work Der Turm (Cat.rais.-no. 18.Oe.3) which means that both works were most likely created within close temporal proximity. (Cf.
