Lot no. 235 - B
MARBLE TORSO OF APOLLO Roman art, first half of the 2nd century AD Marble H. Approx. 47 cm Provenance Former collection from the South of France, built up between 1970 and 1980 Then by descent An exceptional male torso presented in youthful frontal nudity, animated by a slight contrapposto suggesting relaxed balance and subtle movement. The finely rendered musculature gives the figure a virile yet idealised quality, evoking classical notions of heroic male beauty. On the left shoulder, a drapery with rigid, architectural folds contrasts with the natural fluidity of the body, emphasising the softness and vitality of the underlying flesh. At the base of the neck, the residual presence of parotid wisps-small strands of hair behind the ears-provides a further stylistic clue. These features are emblematic of the archaizing style in Roman statuary, which deliberately revisits the anatomical and aesthetic conventions inherited from archaic Greek sculpture. The pubic region features a cavity, indicating that the genitals were sculpted separately and then added back together, a technique inherited from high-quality Greek statuary. With its anatomical precision, compositional balance and sculptural technique, this work reveals the remarkable virtuosity of its creator. Combining virility and beauty, this juvenile nude torso can be identified as an archaic Roman representation of the god Apollo. Marble H. 47 cm circa Provenance Former collection from Southern France, assembled in the 1970s-1980s Thence by descent Exceptional male torso presented in youthful frontal nudity, animated by a slight contrapposto suggesting relaxed balance and subtle movement. The finely rendered musculature lends the figure a quality that is both virile and idealized, evoking classical notions of heroic male beauty. Over the left shoulder, a rigidly and architecturally pleated drapery contrasts with the natural fluidity of the body, emphasising the softness and vitality of the flesh beneath. At the base of the neck, the residual presence of parotid locks-small strands of hair behind the ears-offers a further stylistic clue. These features are characteristic of the archaizing style in Roman statuary, which deliberately revisits anatomical and aesthetic conventions inherited from Archaic Greek sculpture. The pubic region displays a cavity, indicating that the genitalia were carved separately and attached, a technical practice inherited from high-quality Greek nude statuary. Through its anatomical precision, compositional balance, and sculptural technique, this work reveals the remarkable virtuosity of its creator. Combining both virility and beauty, this youthful nude torso may be identified as an archaizing Roman representation of the god Apollo.
