Lot no. 248
TORSO OF HERCULE Marble with beautiful patina Height 21 cm; Width 14 cm, depth 10 cm Roman art, 2nd century Provenance Estate of Jean Charles de Pirey - Indochina war hero and French novelist. The torso, deprived of its head, arms and legs, nevertheless retains a remarkable sculptural presence thanks to the expressive power of the idealised male anatomy. The body is represented in a slight dynamic torsion, characteristic of Hellenistic and Roman heroic sculptures. The shoulders are covered in leanness. This controlled muscular hypertrophy, without being excessive, immediately evokes Hercules, the archetype of divine physical strength in ancient iconography. The modelling is remarkably delicate, with gentle transitions between volumes, polished surfaces creating subtle interplays of light and shadow, and an epidermal sensitivity that suggests life beneath the marble. The body dynamics (slight torsion) and the presence of an element at the back of the torso suggest interaction with other figures or architectural elements. A Roman Marble Fragmentary Statuary Group With Hercules Torso. 2nd century A.D. The torso, deprived of head, arms and legs, nevertheless preserves a remarkable sculptural presence thanks to the expressive power of the idealized masculine anatomy. The body is represented in a slight dynamic torsion, characteristic of Hellenistic and Roman heroic sculptures. The shoulders covered with the leontè. This controlled muscular hypertrophy, without being excessive, immediately evokes Hercules, archetype of divine physical strength in ancient iconography. The modelling is of remarkable delicacy: smooth transitions between volumes, polished surfaces creating subtle plays of shadow and light, epidermal sensitivity suggesting life beneath the marble. The bodily dynamic (slight torsion) as well as the presence of an element at the back of the torso suggests interaction with other figures or architectural elements.
