TOTT (Baron de). Mémoires... sur les Turcs et les Tartares. Amsterdam, 1785; 2 vol. in-4 (254 x 196 mm), coloured marbled calf, spines decorated with gilt fleurons, fillets on covers (contemporary bindings). 16 remarkable figures, 15 of them double-page, finely engraved in aquatint (views and scenes of manners). "One of the most interesting works on the Turks and Tartars of the Crimea" (Chadenat, 1998).
FIRST EDITION. Tott was probably the best connoisseur of Turkey of his time. A diplomat at the French embassy in Constantinople for many years, he negotiated a trade treaty with the Khan of the Tartars, then became consul in Crimea and military adviser to Mustapha III, whom he helped to reform his army and repel the Russians. His extremely lively memoirs shed a particularly interesting light on the state of the Ottoman Empire, Turkish customs and their future in a changing world.
A very fine copy. A few yellowed sections.
