The first, published a century earlier, consisted of only three volumes. This edition comprises four volumes, plus two atlas volumes containing 489 plates drawn by Claude Aubriet. The creator of an original classification of species based on the shape of the corolla, Tournefort (1656-1708) reigned over botany for a hundred years.
