TOURNEFORT (Joseph Pitton de). Élémens de botanique, ou Méthode pour connoître les plantes. on joint une partie de la botanique de Buffon. Lyon, Pierre Bernuset, 1797. 6 volumes in-8, pink cardboard, untrimmed (contemporary binding). Second edition, considerably revised and enlarged by Nicolas Jolyclerc. The first, published a century earlier, consisted of only three volumes. This edition comprises four volumes, plus two atlas volumes containing 489 plates drawn by Claude Aubriet.
The creator of an original classification of species based on the shape of the corolla, Tournefort (1656-1708) reigned over botany for a hundred years. His Élémens de botanique, published in 1694, continued a method based on the structure of flowers and fruit.
