Barely any other landscapist of the 19th century captured the atmosphere of the French riverscapes in a more subtle way. Unmistakable is his light and vibrant brushstroke, whose characteristic is constituted by the dappled leaves of the trees and the muted silvery-grey colours. The flimmer of the poplar trees and willows by the idly running water are the uncomparable indicators of his work. A fisherman is standing in front of a fire on the shore of the river. Is he relaxing after a day of hard work or does his boat, which is jacked onto the wood next to him, need repair?
