Lot no. 301
TSHOKWE, Angola/Democratic Republic of Congo. Hardwood, pigments, glass beads, plant fibres, animal skin. Rare "Mukishi Wa Hundu" mask representing a cynocephalus. This mask has retained the costume netting used to conceal the dancer, and features a large plant-fibre headdress to which a piece of the animal's skin is attached. It is performed during the initiation rites of the "Mukanda" and triggers hilarity among the spectators when the dancer imitates the movements of the monkey. Height 20 cm. (cracks).
