Lot no. 49
Traduction anglaise: This watch belonged to one of the greatest pioneers of the Cousteau team, André Laban. Born in Marseille on 19 October 1928, he embarked in 1952 aboard the Calypso where he remained for more than 20 years. An emblematic personality, he will be at the origin of many projects. In 1953, he studied the manufacture of a box to hold a television camera for the program "Live from the bottom of the sea" in Eurovision. In 1956 is the release of The World of Silence, a film made with 35mm cinema cameras designed and produced by André Laban, Claude Strada and Armand Davso. The film received la palme d'or at the Cannes Film Festival and in 1957 in the United States it won the Oscar for best documentary film. From 1956 to 1966, he was director of the French Underwater Research Office. André Laban then began shooting the Cousteau's underwater Odyssey films. He will co-produce two. In October 1965, he spent three weeks at a depth of 100 meters in the Précontinent 3 experience at Cap Ferrat. Having made dives out of the cockpit, André Laban felt the need to transcribe what the human eye perceived. This is how he began to paint his paintings underwater in 1966. He will continue to dive and paint until his death in October 2018. We are very proud to offer his watch at auction. This Tudor Submariner 7922 was offered to him by Jacques Cousteau in 1958, it was his working tool for more than sixty years. This watch has been regularly revised and works perfectly.
