Lot no. 123
[TURGOT (Michel-Étienne)]. Map of Paris. S.l. [Paris], 1739. Large folio, marbled calf, gilt lace, fleur-de-lis at the corners, coat of arms in the center, spine decorated with gilt fleur-de-lis, decorated edges, interior lace, gilt edges (Period binding). First edition of Turgot's most famous plan of Paris, comprising twenty superb double-page plates engraved by Claude Lucas after drawings by Louis Bretez and a folded assembly plan. In 1734, Michel-Étienne Turgot (1690-1751), Provost of Paris, ordered the creation of a new plan of the capital. His name has remained attached to this resolutely modern initiative, "because of its determination to propose and impose in France and throughout the world the image of Paris, the universal model of a capital city" (Pierre Pinon). Architect and cartographer Louis Bretez worked for two years on the very precise survey and drawing of this plan of Paris and its suburbs, choosing to use the so-called cavalier perspective, without distance points. In 1736, Claude Lucas was commissioned to interpret these plates in etching and burin, while Aubin engraved the text. An excellent copy, bound in the arms of the city of Paris. All plates are mounted on tabs, and plates 18 and 19 have been assembled as required. Heads missing, corners dulled, faint wetness at bottom of plates 15 and 19. Boutier, n°219 - Pinon, 61.
