TURNER (Samuel). Ambassade au Thibet et au Boutan contenant des détails très curieux sur les Mœurs, la Religion, les Productions et le Commerce et une Notice sur les événements qui se sont passés en 1793. Paris, Buisson an IX-1800; 2 vol. in-8 (189 x 124 mm), and an atlas (302 x 227 mm), spotted fawn half calf, smooth spines decorated with gilt fillets (Period bindings). The first account by an English traveller to Tibet and Bhutan. First French edition published the same year as the English original. Sent by the East India Company to ensure the benevolence of Teshoo Lama in their commercial relations, Turner describes the beauties of this unknown land, its customs, religion, agricultural production, fauna and flora. The atlas includes a map (8 cm tear without missing) and 14 double plates, one of which is a calligraphy plate. 12 other maps have been bound in. A fine copy (small amount of worm damage to the last few pages of vol. 1; light wetness at the fold of a few maps).
