Order of Charity (Sefkat Nisani)
Cross, gilt bronze and enamel, 60 x 55mm, AH1295 (1878) (Barac 200; Metin Erüreten p.286). With a ribbon of the Order of Osmania. A red velvet Grand Cross case with the Ottoman coat of arms on the lid (28.5 x 16 x 6.5 cm) is enclosed.
Note: Founded by Sultan Abdulhamid II in 1878- AH1295, this order rewarded Turkish and foreign women for humanitarian or charitable deeds, hence its name Order of Charity or as a token of esteem from the Sultan. The order was often awarded to the Sultan's favourites in his harem.
Cross: rare, scratches, blows to the enamel, crack in the centre right of the Toughra, very fine; case, wear, tears and detachment of the fabric.
