Lot no. 1186
TWO RICHLY INLAID COMMODES Baroque, Lucerne, probably Beromünster, 18th century. Walnut, plum, birch burlwood, and partially tinted, hot-sand shaded woods richly inlaid in the form of geometric reserves with flowers, animals, dancing figures, and rural figurative motifs. The top is inlaid with a pendulum, shells, diamond patterns, and rocaille. Rectangular body on straight legs and flattened feet. Front with four angularly curved drawers with recessed centers. The profiles and traverses are blackened (retouched). Bronze and engraved brass fittings. 2 keys. 124 × 61 × 79 cm or 119 × 60.5 × 83 cm. Restored. Slightly faded, various losses and signs of use. The two commodes are identical in design, but differ in the details of their marquetry and in the use of different woods. A commode similar in shape and design of the front inlays is illustrated in: Walter R.C. Abegglen and Sibylle E. Burchhardt: Das Luzerner Möbel. Lucerne 2011, p. 105, No. 57.
