TWO SIMILAR MINIATURE WHEEL LOCK PISTOLS - The Embden Collection
Germany, probably Nuremberg, late 16th century. In the style of Michel Mann (active in Nuremberg from around 1590 to 1630).
Copper engraved with foliage and a dog, respectively, and gilt, and iron. Both with circular barrels, chamber third octagonal, separated by decorative grooves. Flat lock plate, lock with external wheel, cock with engraved iron decoration. Square trigger guard (missing on one pistol). Ramrods missing.
L ca. 5 cm.
One pistol somewhat incomplete.
Provenance:
The Arlette and Antony Embden Collection, France.
Similar miniature pistols can be found in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna (inv. no. Hofjagd- und Rüstkammer, A2233) and in the Wallace Collection (inv. no. A1166).
