Lot no. 207
Nails and acrylic (white) on cloth-lined wood (plywood panel with fir wood frame). 105 x 75 x ca. 17cm. Titled, dated and signed on verso: Schrei / 02 / Uecker. Above dedication. We would like to thank the Uecker Studio, Düsseldorf, for their kind support. Provenance: Private ownership, North Rhine-Westphalia. Uecker's sculptural oeuvre is largely determined by the "nail", which he used since 1957 as characteristically personal means of representation. The nailed picture is considered the antithesis to the painted image. As rigidly oriented and industrially process of the material, the nail is not capable as the "subjective gesture" of the brush stroke. Possible variations of the design are defined only by the various arrangements of the nails - and this awareness was limited by Uecker. [.] In its essence, [.] Uecker's nail images and objects are determined by the intention to overcome the subjectivity of the informal art and to advance the objective "structures". The word "structure" is addressed as a key concept. (Quoted from: Günther exh. Uecker, images and objects. The early work of drawing, stamping, embossing and sticks frottage, figurines and stage designs for "Parsifal", State Gallery of Stuttgart, 13.03. - 23.05.1976, p. 15). The structure moves with the tension between "Material" and "dematerialization". The nails on the one hand lose their tangibility, as they sway like a field, and are herded together like a vortex. On the other hand, they win back their material nature, by giving us their dimensionality and take in the real space. Here it seems the special field of tension between materiality and dematerialization in Uecker's work consolidate the utmost.
