The principality of Vladimir arose in the 12th century after the break-up of the Rus' of Kiev and was initially ruled by descendants of the Grand Prince of Kiev, Yuri Dolgoruki. It became a vassal of the Mongol Empire, then of the Golden Horde (1239), and was divided into eleven principalities, including the principality of Moscow, which became the largest from 1325.
