Comprehensive and important encyclopaedia by Denis Diderot and Jean Le Rond D'Alembert 35 vol.; D. Diderot and J.B. le Rond d'Alembert, et al. (ed.): "Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers, par une socété de gens de lettres." (Engl. "Encyclopaedia or a well thought-out dictionary of the sciences, arts and crafts, published by a society of writers"). Various publishers, 1751 - 1780. Text and illustrated volume. with a total of approx. 3000 engraved plates in the fields of science, arts and crafts, etc.. Leather binding with partly gilt-stamped spine. Not collated. Book h. 40 cm - 41 cm. The work published by Diderot and d' Alembert between 1751 and 1780, which was banned for a time, is considered the defining encyclopaedia of modern times and a pioneer of the Enlightenment. The main part consists of 28 volumes, 17 text volumes, published between 1751 and 1765 and 11 table volumes, published between 1762 and 1772 as well as 5 later supplementary works from 1776 to 1780. With the participation of important intellectuals of the time such as Voltaire, Rousseau and Montesquieu, the knowledge of an intellectual elite was disseminated. The work is also characterised by its countless engravings, which illustrate the various areas of art, science and craftsmanship in impressive detail.
