Lot no. 216
ONE OF THE FALLEN HEROES OF MOSKOVA CAULAINCOURT (Auguste-Jean-Gabriel de). Autograph letter signed as Grand Esquuyer of the Kingdom of Holland to the Grand Master of the Household of King Louis Bonaparte, Paul-Gabriel d'Alichoux de Sénégra. S.l., "this 11 March". 2 pp. in-12. Strongly suggests that an employee of the Palace be dismissed, a "bad subject" whose "morality is more than suspect" and who "directs and mounts the heads of his comrades for not complying with orders and instructions". Brother of the Duke of Vicence, General Auguste-Jean-Gabriel de Caulaincourt (1777-1812) made a career in the cavalry and was wounded at Marengo. Placed for a time with Louis Bonaparte, he was authorised to follow him to his kingdom of Holland: there he held the posts of aide-de-camp, then general-major, Grand-Escuyer, and carried out a mission to Naples as Dutch ambassador. Having retained command of his French regiment, however, he served at Austerlitz and, after the annexation of the kingdom in 1808, returned permanently to French service as a brigadier general - he was made a baron. He then served on the general staff of the Spanish army, soon rising to the rank of division general, took part in several battles, but returned to France in 1810 for health reasons - he was made a count of the Empire. Employed in the Russian campaign, he commanded the imperial general headquarters, but was killed by a cannonball during the Battle of La Moskova after taking the terrible Russian "great redoubt".
