Lot no. 84
UNKNOWN ARTIST (Biographical data unknown) Decor design mixed media/paper left 12,3 x 7,7 cm right 12 x 5,2 cm member of the school of arts and crafts ESTIMATE °€ 30 - € 60 STARTING PRICE € 30 This design was created by a student at the k. k. Kunstgewerbeschule (Imperial and Royal School of Applied Arts, now the University of Applied Arts Vienna "die Angewandte") in Vienna. This school was founded in 1867, initially under the name "Oberste Schule für das Kunstgewerbe" (Higher School of Applied Arts). It was affiliated with the Österreichisches Museum für Kunst und Industrie (Austrian Museum of Art and Industry, now the MAK). This museum was founded in 1863 based on the model of the South Kensington Museum in London, today's Victoria & Albert Museum, and was intended to serve as a collection of models for artists, industrialists, and the public. The Kunstgewerbeschule was intended to train artists and teachers to meet the needs of the "art industry." Heinrich von Ferstel, who had already built the museum, was commissioned to design a building for the school, which opened in 1877. Unlike the Academy of Fine Arts, female students were admitted from the beginning. One graduate of that era was Gustav Klimt. With the artistic development towards nature observation and free design, the School of Applied Arts also began to move away from working according to historical models at the end of the 19th century. Felician von Myrbach, a member of the Secession, was appointed director in 1899, which was separated from the museum administration the following year. Myrbach's tenure saw reforms and appointments that transformed the Kunstgewerbeschule into the cradle of Austrian Art Nouveau and established its reputation as an institution committed to modernism. Otto Wagner, as a member of the board of trustees, exerted a significant influence on the reform. The teaching staff included Kolo Moser, Josef Hoffmann, and Alfred Roller, director from 1909 to 1934. Franz Cizek implemented a pedagogical reform programme in his widely acclaimed youth art courses. Cizek's course on ornamental form theory gave rise to Viennese Kineticism, where female artists-such as Erika Giovanna Klien-became prominent for the first time. Architects such as Josef Frank, Oskar Strnad, and Oswald Haerdtl continued the tradition of Viennese spatial art. Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky, a graduate of the School of Applied Arts, became the inventor of the first large-scale production of the so-called "Frankfurt Kitchen." PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked °), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax of 13%, for photographys 20%, is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
