UNSIGNED
GREAT WHEEL CLOCK
Unsigned, Great Wheel Clock, Attributed to John Wilding, Petworth, circa 1987
A very fine, rare and attractive, key-wound, inverted Y shaped, brass and steel, great wheel skeleton table clock with white dial, painted radial Roman numerals, railway minute division, blued steel Breguet hands, partially in-line movement with an unusual large wheel mounted on the barrel.
Fitted with a key wound movement, recoil escapement with wire suspension, blued steel screws, great wheel with eight crossings, the escape and third wheels each with six crossings.
Dim. 22 x 36 cm
According to scholars, the clock was made using an ML7 lathe and incorporates symmetrical escape and third wheels. The large wheel is some 8 1/2" in diameter with 290 teeth. The escape and third wheels are designed with equal diameter, thus making the movement symmetrical.
