The crew included Jim McDivitt, Dave Scott and Rusty Schweickart. The main goal of this mission was to carry out a test flight of the lunar module under real conditions in Earth orbit, during which the rendezvous and docking manoeuvre could be rehearsed. This mission proved to be of crucial importance for the later success of the Apollo 11 mission. Although the test flight itself was a complete success, the preparations turned out to be rather difficult for various reasons. When McDivitt and Schweickart entered the flight module for the first time, they were so shocked by its fabrication that they assumed it was a training model. Considering the quality of the module inadequate even for training purposes, McDivitt communicated his frustration to the control centre over the intercom. McDivitt recounts: ‘I went on and on like that. And then I shut up, and there’s this long pause. And finally, somebody comes on the intercom and says, “Jim, that is the real flight vehicle.” I looked at Rusty and he looked at me, and we said, “Oh my God! We’re actually going to fly something like this?” So, it was really chintzy. I mean the outside is Mylar; and, I mean, it was like cellophane and tin foil put together with Scotch tape and staples! I mean, it really is built like that.’ Despite McDivitt and Schweickart’s mild horror at the flimsiness of their flight vehicle, the machine worked like a charm in the vacuum of space. März 1969 mit den Besatzungsmitgliedern Jim McDivitt, Dave Scott und Rusty Schweickart statt fand. Das Ziel war es, ein Testflug der Mondlandefähre unter realen Bedingungen in der Erdumlaufbahn durchzuführen, bei dem das Rendezvous- und Andockmanöver geprobt werden konnte. Diese Mission bewies sich als massgebend wichtig für den späteren Erfolg der Apollo 11 Mission. Obwohl der Testflug selbst ein voller Erfolg war, gestalteten sich die Vorbereitungen aus diversen Gründen als eher schwierig. Als McDivitt und Schweickart das Flugmodul zum ersten Mal betraten, waren die beiden so schockiert, dass sie annahmen, es handle sich um ein Trainingsmodel. Da McDivitt die Qualität des Moduls selbst für Trainingszwecke als unzulänglich erachtete, kommunizierte er der Zentrale seine Frustration über die Sprechanlage. «Ich redete und redete in die Sprechanlage, einfach immer weiter. Dann war ich still, und es gab eine lange Pause. Schliesslich meldete sich jemand und sagte: "Jim, das ist das echte Flugfahrzeug". Ich sah Rusty an und er sah mich an und wir sagten: "Oh mein Gott! Wir werden tatsächlich so etwas fliegen?" Ich meine, die Aussenseite ist aus Mylar; es war wie Zellophan und Stanniolfolie, die mit Klebeband und Heftklammern zusammengehalten wurden!», erzählt McDivitt. Trotz McDivitts und Schweickarts Entsetzen bezüglich der Bauweise ihres Flugmoduls funktionierte die Maschine im Vakuum des Weltraums wunderbar. Die hier präsentierte, sehr gut erhaltene Flagge stammt aus dem persönlichen Besitz von Jim McDivitt und flog mit der Besatzung an Bord der Apollo 9 ins All.
