Triptych of prints, oban tate-e, from the series Tōto meisho (東都名所), Famous Views of the Eastern Capital, plate Ryōgoku yūsuzumi (両國夕すゞみ), Enjoying the cool evening at Ryōgoku Bridge. Signed Hiroshige ga. Publisher Wakasaya Yoichi.
Circa 1847-1848 (Bending, restorations).
Size: each 36.7 x 25.1 cm
This triptych is one of Hiroshige's most famous, depicting three beautiful women strolling along the river Sumida. The left-hand panel shows the Ryōgoku Bridge and the right-hand panel the Yanagi Bridge crossing the Kanda River. On the opposite bank, the lights of the restaurants and teahouses shine brightly. This triptych is full of movement, an aspect reinforced by the undulating branches of the weeping willow and the wind lifting the kimono of the three women.
