Lot no. 44
Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) (Japan, 1786-1865) Triptych of prints, oban tate-e, from the series Jitsu getsu hoshi no uchi (日月星ノ内), Sun, moon and star, Hoshi plates (星), Star. Signed Kunisada aratame nidai Toyokuni ga. Publisher Aritaya Seiemon (Yūeidō). Circa 1844 (Missing, stains). Size: each 37.8 x 25.7 cm Three beautiful women are busy catching fireflies along the Sumida River on a warm summer evening. They are wearing high wooden socks and elegant fans. The two women on the right are wearing cotton kimonos with blue and white prints, while the woman on the left is wearing a long-sleeved kimono (furisode). Kunisada began signing with the name Toyokuni around 1844-1845, as indicated by the signature on this triptych "Kunisada changing his name to Toyokuni II". It is possible that the left-hand plate was printed later than the other two because of the censor's stamp, which is not the same as the others on this plate. Reference: A similar print of the middle plate in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, no. 0491V1962
