Original title While the blooming rape field in the foreground shines brightly in the sunlight, contrasted by red poppy blossoms, the dark, threatening clouds unleash rain over the light blue water in the background. An atmospheric, characteristic work by Herbst, who never attended an art school but was self-taught, studying the landscape painting of French Impressionism and Expressionism. The artist combined stylistic elements from both positions and merged them into his own style. The mood, temperature and lighting that his works convey are clearly at the centre of his work.
