Lot no. 1816
Valentin Ruths (1825 Hamburg - 1905 ibid.)
"Autumn morning". Original title
View of the valley of a low mountain range densely forested with oak trees, with a quiet mountain stream flowing through it and a red deer in the middle ground. Characteristic work in terms of style and motif by the Hamburg painter, who turned away from Romanticism as an innovator of landscape painting and captured sensitive moods of light and air through extremely subtle observation of nature. It is presumably the painting "Herbstmorgen im Rhöngebirge" (Autumn Morning in the Rhön Mountains), which was shown at the Berlin Academy Exhibition in 1870 (cf. Bötticher no. 74). Ruths attended the Munich Academy from 1846 to 1848, continued his training with Johann Wilhelm Schirmer in Düsseldorf and finally returned to Hamburg in 1857. In 1869 Ruths was appointed a member of the Berlin and Vienna academies. Oil on canvas; signed a.; titled and inscribed "Valentin Ruths Hamburg", probably by the artist himself, on two original labels. 66.5 cm x 98.5 cm. Frame.
Oil on canvas. Titled and and inscribed on two original labels, probably by the artist.
