Lot no. 212
VALERIANI, Domenico (19th century)- SEGATO, Girolamo (1792-1836). Atlas of Lower and Upper Egypt. [WITH:] Nuova illustrazione istorico e monumentale del Basso ed Alto Egitto. Florence: Paolo Fumagalli, 1835-1837. First edition of a remarkable series of illustrations depicting Egypt and its monuments, accompanied by detailed descriptive texts. The engravings depict maps, costumes, and views of ancient and modern Egypt. The project was initiated by the Egyptologist and chemist Girolamo Segato (1792-1836), who complemented images from the works of Denon, Grau, and Rosellini with his own drawings. In 1818, Segato travelled to Egypt with the engineer Lorenzo Masi, surveying and mapping large areas south of Wadi Halfa. After his untimely death, the project was completed by his collaborator Domenico Valeriani. Segato is also renowned for developing a petrification technique akin to mummification, the secret of which remains a mystery, as he destroyed all documentation before his death. 2 volumes, folio (320 x 260mm). 2 text volumes, 4to (227 x 145mm); part-titles, 160 aquatint and colour plates (occasional spotting, otherwise a good copy). Publisher's cloth binding, boards decorated in gilt, titles gilt directly to boards, spines lettered and decorated in gilt; the two text volumes bound in green leather with gilt titles and decorations (minor wear).
