Lieutenant Richard Minton's B4 suitcase, in thick OD canvas and brown leather. The leather handles, although complete, show marked wear. The zip is out of order. Stencilled inscription LT Richard R. Minton O1106315. Presence of an invasion band numbered 43236, corresponding to the 103rd Engineer Combat Battalion, Company C, 28th US Infantry Division. During the Second World War, this unit took part in Operation Overlord, the liberation of Belgium, including the battles of the Hurtgen Forest and the Ardennes (Saint-Vith), and the German campaign of 1945. The division was then commanded successively by Omar Bradley (194243) and Norman Cota (194445). Heavily worn piece, showing damage from rodent bites. According to the seller's information this piece is from Wibrin. On 14 January 1945, a unit of the 2nd Armoured Division launched an attack on Wibrin. Six Sherman tanks, accompanied by mounted infantry, advanced into the village but were ambushed by elements of the German 116th PanzerDivision. Two Panther tanks and a Sturmgeschutz III (StuG III) self-propelled gun had taken up defensive positions near the main road. In the battle, four of the Shermans were destroyed by the Panthers, while the other two were put out of action by the StuG III. One of the Shermans, now preserved at Wibrin, was hit several times, one shell penetrating the front armour, another damaging the gun, causing it to explode on a later shot. It comes with a sturdy OD canvas bag with reinforced carrying handles. All three snaps are functional, with no visible markings. According to the seller's information, this piece comes from Luzery. The hamlet of Luzery, located in the commune of Fauvillers in the province of Luxembourg (Belgium), is in an area that was the scene of significant events during the Second World War, notably during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944 and January 1945.
