Edition of the tale of Hassan Badreddine el Bassaraoui translated by Docteur Joseph-Charles Mardrus, decorated with 117 compositions, including 7 stencilled by Saudé after watercolours by Van Dongen and 110 black compositions (66 full-page, 2 double and 42 in the text). "Kees van Dongen (1877-1968), an important figure in Fauvism and a painter of the Années Folles in Paris, travelled extensively to the Orient in the 1910s. It was at Mardrus's request that he produced the illustrations for this deluxe edition of Hasan al-Basrî's tale, several images of which were censored" (Vernay-Nouri). Limited edition of 310 numbered copies, this being one of 200 on Hollande van Gelder Zonen vellum paper (no. 195). Enriched with a suite of 4 censored black plates. Spine unstained, small tears and rubbing to the covers, inside covers soiled and part of the spine missing, transfer of the compositions to the facing pages, transfer of the text to certain stencils, small tear with loss in the margin of one of the full-page compositions.
