Lot no. 86
VAN VEEN (Otto). Emblemata Horatiana, imaginibus in æs incisis atque latino, germanico, gallico et belgico carmine illustrata. Amsterdam, Henri Wetstein, 1684. In-8, stiff vellum, smooth spine, spotted edges (Dutch binding of the period). One of the most famous emblem books of the seventeenth century, designed and illustrated by the Flemish painter and art theorist Otto van Veen (1550-1629). This edition, with the addition of the German text, is the first in four languages.
It is illustrated with a title-frontispiece after Gérard de Lairesse and the 103 emblematic vignettes from the original 1607 edition, reduced and finely re-engraved on copperplate for this edition. Each is accompanied by a commentary on a Latin quotation, usually from Horace, in Latin, German, French and Flemish.
A pleasant copy despite some rare and discreet brown spots.
