Friedrich Wilhelm Christian Ludwig von Jagow (1771 - 1857) was born into an aristocratic family from Brandenburg. He served as an Infantry General in the Prussian army and as Canon of Brandenburg. He was appointed Major General after the Battle of Leipzig, and became Commander General of the IV army corps in 1821. Jagow received numerous accolades, including the Iron Cross, the Order Pour le Mérite with oak leaves, the 1st class Order of the Red Eagle, and the Order of the Black Eagle with the chain. He celebrated his 50th anniversary of service in 1836 and took the opportunity to ask to resign. According to family tradition, Frederick William II presented this vase to him on that occasion. It depicts scenes from his military career with the silhouettes of the Garnisonskirche in Potsdam, St. Mary's Church in Breslau, Erfurt Cathedral, and St. Peter and Paul in Brandenburg in the background.
