POLYCHROME FAIENCE VASE, BOTTEGA DEI FONTANA, URBINO, CIRCA 1565-1570 double-handled, with grotesque and scrolled handles and decorated with a continuous lake landscape with cartouche inscribed with the contents supported by two cupids and the image of Justice (?) enthroned; a few firing defects, some minor restoration and missing, some pictorial retouching H. cm 33, W. cm 31 AN URBINO MAIOLICA VASE, CIRCA 1565-1570; FEW FIRING DEFECTS, SOME MINOR RESTORATIONS, LOSSES AND RE-PAINTINGS This maiolica boasts a traditional commission from Guidobaldo II della Rovere, Duke of Urbino, for the ducal pharmacy in Urbino. Various examples of this apothecary's ware, which appears to be close to the Pharmacy of the Holy House of Loreto made by the workshop of Orazio Fontana, are known: among others, the chevrette in the Grobet-Labadié Museum in Marseille, the albarellos in the Metropolitan Museum in New York (J. Rasmussen, Italian Maiolica in the Robert Lehman Collection, New York, 1989, pp. 172-174) and the two other albarellos in the Lehman Collection (ibid., p. 172, nos. 102 and 103).
