Alexander Vasilyevich Vereshchagin (1850-1909) - brother of the famous battle painter Vasily Vereshchagin, professional soldier and participant in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, later promoted to lieutenant-general (1908). In retirement, he devoted himself to literature and the writing of memoirs, providing valuable first-hand accounts of military and social life in nineteenth-century Russia.
