VERLAINE Paul (1844-1896). Poèmes saturniens. Paris, Alphonse Lemerre, 1867; in-12, [3] ff, 163 pp, cherry jansenist morocco, ribbed spine, cherry box lining with frame of 7 cold fillets and one gilt fillet, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine, slipcase (Semet et Plumelle). First edition of Verlaine's first collection of poems, announced in the Journal de la Librairie on 17 November 1866. By placing it under the invocation of Saturn, he was referring to the accepted meaning: sombre and melancholy. Self-published with the help of his cousin Elisa Dujardin, printed on white vellum with small ornaments, it was well received in literary circles.
Edition of 505 copies: 5 on Chine, 9 on Hollande and 491 on vellum. The title page is dated 1866, the cover 1667. - A splendid copy on fine vellum.
