Large in-8 publisher's polychrome fan and elephant boards, lighthouse spine, three-line gilt title in cartouche, gilt edges. Crack of 45 mm at the head of the upper spine, brown stains on the 2nd plate. HETZEL-HACHETTE" HYBRID EDITION, large in-8, illustrated, preserved in its publisher's polychrome boards "with a fan and an elephant" and with the title in the cartouche; the body of the work is still "Hetzel". UNIQUE BINDING for this title with a "lighthouse spine". These "Hachette-Hetzel" editions, with their often bright red boards and excellent quality golds, contrast with the post-war 1914-1918 editions, which are a dull pink and have false golds in which all vestiges of the polychrome have disappeared; they can only be distinguished from Hetzel's last publications by their second plate bearing, cold and in the centre, the diamond-shaped badge containing the Hachette monogram, "H & Cie". The main body of the book is also characterised by the presence of the last editions produced at Hetzel's request, and therefore bears the publisher's mark at the bottom of the title pages: "Collection Hetzel" (Jauzac, 389).
