Large single in-8, publisher's English green percaline boards, gilt decoration "aux bouquets de roses" of the 2nd type, smooth spine "au semis d'étoiles", combed endpapers, gilt edges (Ch. Magnier). First illustrated edition, with 56 vignettes in the text by Riou, most of them wood-engraved by Pannemaker. Second edition copy: the errors in the caption on p. 45 and in the chapter number on p. 201 have been corrected. First simple hardback with bunches of roses, of the very rare type "au dos semé d'étoiles", which was not used by Hetzel until 1867, for this title and Cinq semaines en ballon. This is one of the most prized hardcovers, extremely rare in this colour. Endpapers a little unstuck, spine gilt a little faded, some minor foxing.
