VIALA (Pierre) and Victor VERMOREL. General treatise on viticulture. Ampélographie. Paris, Masson & Cie, 1901-1910. 7 volumes in-4, bradel green cloth (publisher's binding). First edition of this monumental work, which required the work of more than 80 contributors from all over the world over a period of almost ten years: owners, growers, agricultural professors, oenologists, agricultural engineers, etc., from Europe, the United States and South America.
Magnificently illustrated with 570 out-of-text lithographs, including 500 in colour, painted by Alexis Kreyder and Jules Troncy, and 820 engravings in the text.
The first volume deals with general ampelography, including a study of the Ampelidae family, the genus Vitis and its species, American vines and vine biology. The next five volumes describe in detail the most important grape varieties in the vineyards of France and abroad, with notes on very small, almost confidential vines.
Secondary grape varieties are also studied, and the final volume contains an ampelographic dictionary.
This is certainly the finest book devoted to grape varieties, and by far the best on the subject.
Occasional spotting.
